Haitian migrants continue to arrive in El Paso, the majority are released in the country

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Days after the massive migrant camp that had gathered under the Del Rio International Bridge was emptied, hundreds of migrants continue to arrive in El Paso.

According to Ruben Garcia, of the House of the Annunciation told KTSM they expected to receive more than 300 migrants on Sunday. This is in addition to the more than 2,700 migrants who have already arrived.

Garcia said that when migrants arrive in El Paso, they are transported to one of eight different locations in the city for treatment. During treatment, migrants are tested for Covid-19.

Migrants who test positive for Covid-19 are transferred to a local hotel for a 10-day quarantine, migrants who test negative for Covid-19, he said, are offered a vaccine.

However, Garcia said some migrants do not agree to take the vaccine because of the side effects they might experience.

In an interview with KTSM on Sunday, Garcia pointed out that even though they receive a very high number of migrants every day, which he says is difficult, their organization is able to process these migrants for their release in the 24 to 48 hours and most migrants then leave El Paso and enter the country to places such as Denver, Houston and Chicago.

The latest information from Garcia comes as the Homeland Security Secretary has confirmed that the vast majority of migrants who arrived in Del Ro with in recent weeks have already been released in the United States.

Alejandro Mayorkas said as of Sunday the number of migrants allowed to enter the country was around 12,000.

The secretary also said that the number of migrants released in the United States could increase because, according to him, around 5,000 more are currently being processed. The secretary also confirmed that none of the migrants under the Del Rio Bridge had been tested for Covid.

In addition, Secretary Mayorkas, who initially defended the horse patrol in Del Rio after a video of an officer on horseback in Del Rio went viral, said on Monday he was horrified after seeing the photos.

Governor Greg Abbott has announced that if the border patrol officers on these horses in Del Rio are made redundant, he will hire them in the state of Texas.
