Captain America 4 Director Hints At Start Of Production

Captain America: New World Order isn’t expected to arrive for another two years, but the team is “already very busy putting everything together.”

Anthony Mackie is currently working on the twisted metal television series, but Captain America: New World Order is probably next on his list. The film’s director has revealed that he and the crew are already well into pre-production, meaning the film will likely start filming early next year. Many details about Marvel Studio’s upcoming slate of films were revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo last weekend, and Mackie’s first outing as Captain America was among the reveals. Director Julius Onah recently discussed working on the next generation of the Avenger in an interview with Collider. He said:

“We’re already really busy putting it all together. As you know, with these films, there are so many elements, between the casting and the script, the effects and the stunts. It’s really exciting to really dive into it. “

Although it seemed obvious that Anthony Mackie would get his own movie as Captain America, the reveal wasn’t made until April 2021, and the movie’s title and place in the upcoming Marvel slate was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Last weekend it was announced that Tim Blake Nelson would reprise his role as Samuel Sterns/The Leader, which was last seen in 2008 The Incredible Hulk. Similar to Tim Roth’s reintroduction as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, Nelson’s return is another MCU tie-in with the first Marvel movie.

Anthony Mackie’s Captain America trip will be ‘an amazing trip’

Following the events of Avengers: EndgameSam Wilson was always going to be the MCU’s new Captain America, but Sam had to go on a personal journey in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier only to realize that Steve Rogers was right to hand over the shield to him and that he was America’s next hero.

Now, Captain America: New World Order will see Mackie take the helm for the first time as Captain America, and director Onah previously commented on the challenges the character will face in his first big-screen adventure. He said:

“It’s going to be a really, really amazing ride. It’s a paranoid thriller starring Sam [Wilson] at the center of it all, and he’s now in this position where he’s a leader and he has to face this challenge of what it means to lead a group of people that he really cares about. For Sam, before he was part of a team, but now leading a team is a whole new set of challenges, so his journey in this film is really about that.”

Having been a part of the MCU from the start, appearing first in Captain America: The First Avenger, it was only fitting that the character of Sam would take over the role of his longtime friend. While some thought it should be Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier Bucky Barnes who should have inherited the Captain America tag, there are plenty of reasons why that wouldn’t happen, one of ‘among them being his involvement in the Love at first sight line-up with the likes of Red Guardian, Ghost and US Agent.

We’ll see Sam take on his Captain America responsibilities in Captain America: New World Order when the film is released on May 3, 2024.
