Biden must ‘remove the shackles’ from US energy production

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Said the United States must return to a state of energy independence during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” saying the Biden administration was to “remove the chains from national production“.

Why is this important: In an interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan earlier this week, McConnell highlighted household power generation as a key policy priority in 2023.

  • “We’re going to do everything we can to push this administration toward home power generation,” McConnell told Swan.

What they say : “It’s really ridiculous. I mean, the administration wants everyone to produce more except us. They want us to be green and so they go after our allies in the Middle East asking them to increase production,” McConnell said Sunday.

  • “We were energy independent until 2019. We can be energy independent again,” he added.
  • “The administration needs to take the chains off of domestic production. We can meet our own needs and we can export, and help the Europeans wean themselves off Russian oil and gas, which I think clearly now they are realizing that it is the best and the surest way.”

To note: Energy independence alludes to the goal of producing enough fuels to avoid depending on the rest of the world to fill gas tanks and maintain electricity, writes Neil Irwin of Axios.

  • But the United States produced more oil than it consumed in 2020, and the numbers were essentially balanced in 2021, according to the Energy Information Administration.
