fans of the John Wick franchise have good reason to celebrate. The Ana de Armas –led spin-off Ballerina will begin production in the coming week, TV Line reported. The announcement was made by the CEO of Lionsgate Jon Feltheimer during the last investor call. The franchise’s future prospects look good, as among other franchise-related news, it has been announced that Colin Woodel-directed a three-part prequel series The Continental will stream internationally on Amazon Prime outside of the United States and the studio is also “presenting proposals” for a major video game based on the Keanu Reeves movies.
News broke last year that the no time to die star was cast in the lead role in Ballerina film, which will follow a young ballet school-trained assassin seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The story follows his quest for revenge against those who killed his family. The feature film will be directed by Underworld director Len Wiseman who directs from a script of Shay Hattonwhich is known for features like Zack Snyderit is army of the dead and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. De Armas revealed in an interview earlier this year that Emerald Fennellthe Oscar-winning writer-director behind the 2020s Promising young woman completed the screenplay from a woman’s perspective. That’s all that’s really known about the revenge-fueled film, with no additional cast members announced yet.
De Armas proved his sense of action in no time to die as well as the recently released Russo Brother Netflix movie The gray man where she played alongside Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Knives out star was last seen in Blondrealized by Andre Dominiquebased on the 2000 novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. The film presented a fictionalized story of the life and career of Marilyn Monroe, while the film did not sit well with audiences, De Armas was widely praised for stepping completely into the shoes of the Hollywood icon. With his career full of notable fan-favorite features like Blade Runner 2049and deep waters among other things, there is no doubt that the actor can carry the action franchise. Associated with talents like Wiseman, Hatten and Fennell, Ballerina is going to be as exciting as the original franchise.
First released in 2014, Reeves-led hit John Wick catapulted into two sequels, John Wick: Chapter 2and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. After Parabellum became the franchise’s highest-grossing film in just 10 days, grossing $326 million worldwide, a fourth and fifth installments were announced. Seen the talent behind Ballerinaboth on and off screen, the film may aim to repeat the success of the original franchise.
