Air Products to Build Green Liquid Hydrogen Plant in Arizona

Hydrogen bonded zero carbon liquid hydrogen for the mobility market

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa., March 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Air Products (NYSE: APD), a global leader in hydrogen supply, distribution and distribution, today announced that it will build, own and operate a 10-ton facility metric meters per day to produce green liquid hydrogen in Casa Grande, Arizona. The zero-carbon liquid hydrogen facility is expected to be operational in 2023 and its product will be sold to the hydrogen market for mobility in California and other locations requiring carbon-free hydrogen.

The facility will use two thyssenkrupp nucera electrolysers to produce hydrogen gas, which will be converted to liquid hydrogen using Air Products’ proprietary technology. The site will also include a terminal for product distribution to customer locations across California and other markets.

Air Products’ production process eliminates carbon by powering the entire facility with carbon-free, renewable energy. The facility will include advanced compression technology supplied by strategic alliance Baker Hughes to power the liquefier. This compression technology is also used for Air Products’ previously announced global carbon-free hydrogen project NEOM, located in Saudi Arabiaand the recently announced net zero hydrogen production complex at Alberta, Canada.

Due to several regulations California has taken steps to aggressively decarbonize its transport sector, the largest emissions sector in its economy, by switching to zero-emission vehicles. The state has also set a goal for all drayage trucks to be zero-emissions by 2035 and for heavy-duty vehicles to be converted to zero-emissions vehicles by 2045. Hydrogen is a critical part of the decarbonization of the transport sector. Hydrogen fuel cells are gaining traction as the technology of choice over batteries in heavy-duty applications due to faster refueling times, longer range and larger payloads, while offering better performance in extreme weather conditions. Hydrogen as a transportation fuel most closely mirrors the traditional transportation fueling experience.

“We are excited to bring this new source of green hydrogen to the California market and recognize the vision of decarbonizing the transport sector. California is a world leader in the energy transition and as the world leader in hydrogen and hydrogen for mobility, Air Products is proud to contribute to solving a major energy and environmental challenge. the Arizona is another link in the hydrogen supply chain to ensure a reliable supply of low-carbon fuel to customers. Air Products continues to seek additional opportunities to produce low-carbon and zero-carbon hydrogen to meet growing demand in key regions around the world,” said Eric GuterVice President of Air Products, Hydrogen for Mobility.

As the world’s largest hydrogen producer, Air Products has experience across the entire hydrogen value chain and drives sustainable growth by building, owning and operating the largest production, gasification , carbon capture, transportation and refueling in the world. The company’s technologies are used in more than 1.5 million refuelings per year in 20 countries. With over 60 years of global hydrogen experience in more than 50 countries, Air Products has the proven capability and know-how to manufacture hydrogen by all available production methods and to distribute it. emission-free fuel more and more important in a safe, reliable and economical way.
